SEXUAL DEFILEMENT: JUSTICE SERVED AND DELIVERED

An author said ’Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it." As a foundation, success has indeed come to us in the pursuit of justice. Having secured a long term partnership with international Federation of women lawyers (FIDA) and Triax Solicitors both in Bayelsa state who are committed to working with us to effectively reduce and prevent all forms of sexual violence, abuse and violation of the girl child in Bayelsa State and the Niger Delta region at large. Goldcoast Developmental Foundation is glad to announce its success in seeking for justice for a girl who was sexually defiled by her foster father.
The High Court 9 of Bayelsa state, presided by Hon. justice T.Y Abassi gave the judgement on the 9th of January, 2021 over a defilement matter of The State v Preye Ojoko, and the judgment was given in favour of the state. This was encouraging to FIDA Bayelsa and Goldcoast Developmental foundation as it increased the zeal and passion in protecting and fighting for the vulnerable.
The matter started on the 4th day of February 2021 with both the prosecution and the defence opening and closing their cases on the same day. Final written addresses were adopted on the very next day the 5th of February, 2021 and judgment were given on the 9th of February, 2021.
After carefully observing the matter for days, the court found the defendant guilty and however tempered justice with mercy by sentencing the defendant to 5 years imprisonment.
